Self-Care Saturday: Be Your Own Advocate

Today take time out to think about the causes, people or things that you have been a faithful and strong and advocate for.

Merriam’s Webster Dictionary defines an Advocate as 1. One who pleads the cause of another 2. One who defends or maintains a cause or proposal 3. One who supports or promotes the interests of a cause of group.

What are or were you advocating for? Someone’s personal needs or situation, their medical assistance, a promotion? Whatever it is/was think about how hard you pleaded on their behalf and how much energy, money and time you invested. Now that you have reviewed the lists, is your name on either one of them? If it is, where does your name fall on the list? Are you at the top, in the middle, at the bottom or on the list hat hasn’t been created yet?

Being an advocate for yourself is a part of self care that is extremely important. It is okay to advocate for others and worthy causes but we deserve advocacy too. It is time that we use our voices to make sure that we have what we need and in some cases what we want.

The areas of our lives that come to my mind are:

Relationships: In friendships and romantic relationships, we must demand that we are treated respectfully and there is open communication to discuss our desires, wants and needs. Don’t get so caught up in wanting to be with someone or having friends that you neglect the importance of making sure that you are treated like a human being. You matter, your thoughts matter and you are worth someone’s time, energy, love and respect.

Health: We must advocate for or mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. We cannot allow others to make choices for us. If your medical professionals are not listening to you, demand or request a new one until you have the one that is right for you.

Spiritual Wellness: There are soo many options to choose from to comfort you. Let’s be honest, your parents or grandparents way of spiritual wellness may not work for you. Find what works for you and stand firm in your choice.

Professional Life: Be an advocate for your promotion, your pay and your career path. No one knows what you want better than you. Put your skills to use and go after what you want or need. This includes making sure you speak out against toxic leaders, work environments and unfair work practices.

There are more ways that we can be advocates for ourselves. Today, I ask that you sit down and make time to see where you can be a better advocate for yourself or encourage someone to be a better advocate for themselves. Remember, you are worth advocating for.
