In November 2016, I was placed in a new position at work that required me to move to a new location within the area. The move was welcoming to me as the new job came with more responsibility, new challenges and a different platform to take care of people. The new job also came with a longer commute than I was used to. On a good day I can get to work in about 20-30 minutes. On a bad day it can take up to an hour to get to work one way.
After talking to a coworker about their commute, there was something that caught my attention. He listened to podcasts on the way in to work. I always attempted to listen to podcast but would get frustrated when trying to find a podcast that interested me. One day when I arrived home, I sat down and took the time to look at podcasts to see what would interest me. Man oh man! The search tool is awesome. I searched for financial podcasts, career podcast, social podcast and podcast for black women. The results were AMAZING!!! I have subscribed to a few but here are my favorites, I also follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter:
Real Career Talk with Sherry Sims: Black Career Women’s Network (BCWN) Founder and Career Strategist
Myleik Teele’s Podcasts: curlBox CEO
Side Hustle Pro: Female Entrepreneurs
Happy Black Woman Podcast with Rosetta Thurman
Blessed & Bossed Up with Tatum Temia
How does she do it? With Tiffany F. Sutherland
Brown Ambition with Mandy & Tiffany
Clever Girls Know with Bola Sokunbi (Finance)
I am so happy with these because they speak to me as a black, career woman. Some days being a career woman is hard because there aren’t that many people that look like you or understand things from your perspective. Always remember, if you are not doing what you love in your career it doesn’t mean that you cannot be your best at it.
My last and final thought, you are not alone, there are many of us who are juggling careers, hobbies, motherhood, and thousands of other things. Take the time out to take care of yourself and apply what you learn or have learned.
Feel free to listen to the above mentioned podcasts and let me know what you think.
